#NaniboujouLadies2019 … The Story Continues … Day 2

Dinner Nanijoubou 19

We made it!  No more dreaming.  This is real!

Enjoying our first meal … award winning menu … so many choices …

After unpacking and checking out the beach, we were hungry and headed to The Lodge.  The Lodge boasts Minnesota’s largest native rock fireplace, a 200 ton work of art which stands in the 30 by 80 foot dining room.  Do you see the walls and ceiling?  It is brilliantly decorated in designs of the Cree Indian and has never been repainted.

Naniboujou is Cree for ‘the god of the outdoors’.  Back in the 1920’s, Naniboujou was created as an ultra-exclusive private club, boasting charter members Babe Ruth, Jack Dempsey and Ring Lardner.  A membership of 1000 was originally sought, but when the black market crashed on “Black Tuesday”, the club began to fail.  We had heard, the hopes included boats loading from Chicago with Naniboujou Lodge as the ultimate destination.  Tim and Nancy Ramey are the owners and hosts … grateful their guests ‘return seeking a quiet, peaceful, and natural environment. They come to gather their senses and to replenish both body and spirit in a place called Naniboujou.’

After dinner, we went to the beach, until the cool weather sent us inside to the solarium.  Then our senses told us we needed sleep!  The rooms are cozy.  We all slept well and went together for a marvelous breakfast (yes, food delightfully prepared by someone else will continue to be a recurring theme)!  Becky, Leslie and AnnMarie headed into Grand Marais to explore.  (We had stopped at their Food Co-Op before arriving – what a great Co-Op – we highly recommend!)  Pam and I wanted our time out on the beach, as close to Lake Superior as we could be.  The 3 Ladies headed out, to return for Tea at 3!

Pam spent her time on one end of the beach … I was on the other.  Every now and again, we’d connect, but mostly enjoyed our quiet, reflective, meditative time.  #onthebeach  #withlakesuperior  I marveled at her creations.  Here are a couple:

I spent my afternoon, evening and part of the next morning, contemplating on life, giving thanks … and using an awesome 8 foot log … and a beach filled with stones (I focused on the white ones) to create an alter of sorts.  I ended up with this.  When I found the big heart stone, I knew I was finished and placed it in front of the log.  More details are on a recent Instagram post here.

While in Grand Marais, Becky couldn’t resist the sun and warm stone beckoning her.  Once again, allowing the gift of Mother Earth to fill her up!

Tea Time was at 3pm.  We dressed up and decided to enjoy it in the solarium.  Oh my, it was prepared with table cloth and lace, dainty dishes and gold silverware.  The sandwiches, biscuit and cookies were a tasty delight!

We spent the rest of the day, hanging out.  Some took naps.  Some read.  Some played on the beach.  Some painted.

Leslie enjoyed her time with a butterfly!

She didn’t divulge that conversation!

That evening, we had a campfire!  It was a special time.  Heidi joined us for a bit, then Matthew and Greg spent the rest of the evening with us.  Fire blazing, Lake Superior’s gentle waves, along with the moon and stars … made for a night to light our hearts for a long time.

Then we headed in for our last sleep at Naniboujou Lodge. (For this trip!)

With moonlight shining on our pillows and the gentle waves singing us to sleep.

Next Up: Our last day – Coming Home – Re-entering the Real World … Ooftah!

Thank you for joining me/us on the journey.  We’re glad you’re here.

Here’s the Thing … Collage Wisdom #3

20181017_063322_HDRWhat a relief!

It’s so easy to worry.  Look back with regrets.  Woulda, coulda, shoulda.  The best thing about looking back, is the wisdom I’ve gained to move forward.  It’s true – every situation has had Divine Timing.  Mind you, I did not/do not care BEING in certain life events, but when they were most difficult, Earth Angels came in at just the right moments.  They helped me walk through tough stuff with divorce, depression and single parenting.  I’ve learned much, going through the muck.  I’m stronger than I ever thought I’d be.  I’m braver.  The Universe does know exactly what it is doing and an incredible teacher.  I have to take ownership in playing my role in it.  (Not scoring 5 Stars is a reality check!  Yes, I’ll admit to less than stellar performances.)  Breathing helps, every single time!  My asking for help, being willing to change my way of thinking, being adventurous enough to try new things … like dating, for example, were keys to opening doors to new life … and believe happiness would greet me.

20181017_063303_HDR It did!

The Universe is still playing with me on the dating thing … none-the-less, my life is filled with happiness, because there are lots of doors in life to open, and I’m twisting a lot of knobs!!  Not all of them open.  I respect that now.  I don’t try to bust or jiggle them open anymore.  I’ve noticed …  light, from a door cracked open in the dark – is amazingly bright.  Look at the stars and the moon on a partly cloudy night – see how the light ebbs and flows with banks of clouds, or wisps … as the earth faithfully turns.  It’s taking time to notice a door is actually open … and being willing to walk through it and … play!

Meet Sofiya & Dochas …

20180523_130814

Spirit Doll – Sofiya

Sofiya is a Croation name – Meaning Wisdom.  She started with a meditation, then a trip to my backyard’s crabapple tree – I wanted something with tiny branches – and then the perfect driftwood for her body – a heart – multi wool colors of purple (Wisdom/Spirit – 7th Chakra), deep blue (Intuition – 6th Chakra) and teal (Speaking Your Truth – 5th Chakra), with gentle curl white wool for her hair, speckles of moss, and amethyst stones embracing the energies of Spirit in meditation, calming, intuition … Here is how she began:

I needle felted all the wool to make her dress and matching scarf.  And then she began to come together.  Sofiya was very easy and calming to birth.  Gentle.  Strong.  Wise.  Calm.  She’s easy to hold in your hand … you feel her supporting you!  Sweet.

And then there is …

Dochas – Meaning “Hope” – Bringing Faith to the Future.  She has very curly wool for hair, a feather and tiny Lake Superior stone to hold it in place, along with a variety of wool colors needle felted with moss interspersed.  Her heart is a bigger Lake Superior stone and when held, your thumb fits perfectly on her heart.  I gifted Dochas to a wonderful friend who calls in a Circle of Women for meditation and sharing up here in the North Country.  I think the symbolism matches beautifully.  Spirit’s having so much fun with this!  Meet Dochas:

I’m enjoying sharing their stories with you … And grateful to Spirit and  Mother Nature’s generosity in their creations.

Birthing Spirit Dolls – “Sharing the Love”

20180603_210646_HDR“Sharing the Love” A Spirit Doll by Debbie

A few months back, friend, Lisa Jordan, Artistic Director at The Crossing Arts Alliance, introduced me to Spirit Dolls.  She had sent me info by the artist Chris Flynn, who blends spirit energy, fibers and magic into her creations, beginning with intention and meditation.  I fell in love with the idea … and Lisa asked if I’d teach a class at The Crossing Arts in the fall, with their Fiber Arts Trail.

And so … I thought I’d try.

Starting from scratch, I got the clay, face molds (I’ll practice learning how to make faces at some point), paints, finishing spray and a plethora of sticks, stones – some from beautiful Lake Superior, leaves, pinecones, herbs, moss (with tobacco offerings of thanksgiving to Mother Nature), Lisa’s beautiful wool, and piles of do-dads, fabrics, buttons, lace … you get the idea.  Meditation, began the birthing process … I had no idea who would appear.

My first one, Leighaeasta, (Irish for ‘healed’), will be a story for another time.  She took a long time to be born, as is often the case for a first!  “Sharing the Love”,  was great fun.  She has a piece of driftwood as her core, sticks from my back yard, moss, kid fleece (her hair) from a goat named Maximus, jute, stones … and filled with love.  Her spirited nature wants to be outside my front door, greeting guests with playfulness and joy!

I’m so grateful for Lisa.  She truly has uncovered a type of textural artist, I didn’t know was in me.  I’ve enjoyed taking her needle felting classes and have made numerous felted Angels as gifts … and the birthing continues!

I’m excited to share my Spirit Doll stories.  I look forward to you joining me!

The Art of BEing …

I love early morning coffee time with God.  Quiet time.  Nurturing.  I never cease to be amazed at what comes though when I journal.  After being on a hiatus with this practice during the time of a whirlwind romance, Spirit was ready and waiting when I returned. (Note to self: Never let anyone or anything get in the way of these gentle moments. God wove around and about and through me during that time – I feel clarity and strength would have been recognized sooner with meditation and taking time to journal.)

And so … one early morning, as words poured out on paper, it was clear Spirit was prompting me to “put myself out there”.  What unfolded was a series of gatherings – for people to come together on a path of discovery for body, mind and Spirit.  It was to be called: The ART of BEing.  That was a WOW moment.  I’m one that needs confirmation … still, after all these years.  Like, I’m not imagining this … or am I?  If I were to do this, we’d need a space, so, God, you’re going to have to come up with something.  You provide the space, I’ll be brave and do this.

gorge

I took a breath, and started my day.  One of my “to do” things, was renewing my membership with The Crossing Arts.  An amazing art community, fostering individuals to create their own works of art! Be sure to check them out.  While I was there, I was offered the Art Gallery as space to hold gatherings for The ART of BEing.  How incredible is that?!  The beautiful, creative art – first imagined by the artist and then coming to reality, surrounding us as we gather … this is affirmation, don’t you think? Now, I’m being brave and holding up my end of the deal!  You can get more info at The ART of BEing!  A couple of wonder-filled things we will be doing: meditating, taking time to journal and share … I think Spirit is smiling.

What I know to be true … BEing true to myself, BEing still in the silence, BEing able to listen, BEing willing to be brave … are parts of God and the goodness that is waiting.  All of us are a piece of ART … BEing who we are … is our gift to the world.
